iPad vs laptop at the repair counter

When setting up a POS system for a phone repair shop, one of the first decisions is hardware. Do you use a laptop, a desktop, or a tablet?

We spoke to a dozen shop owners and tested both setups. Here is what we found.

The case for iPad

Speed at intake. When a customer walks in, you want to capture their details fast. An iPad sitting on the counter is always ready — no waking from sleep, no finding the right window. Tap, type, done. In our testing, intake on iPad averaged under 30 seconds per ticket compared to nearly a minute on laptop.

Portability. Some shops have a front counter and a back bench. With an iPad, a technician can carry the POS to the bench to update a ticket status without walking back and forth. One shop owner told us this alone saved his team 20 minutes a day.

Customer-facing. You can turn the iPad around to show a customer their quote or have them sign off on a repair. Try doing that smoothly with a laptop — it is awkward at best. The customer experience matters, especially when you are asking someone to leave their expensive device with you.

Counter space. Repair shop counters are usually small and cluttered with devices waiting for pickup, tools, parts trays, and paperwork. An iPad takes up less space than a coffee cup. A laptop with its keyboard and trackpad eats up a quarter of your counter.

Touch-first. Repair technicians often have tools or parts in their hands. A touch screen means they can update a ticket status with one finger instead of needing both hands free for a keyboard and trackpad. When your hands are busy, touch is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

The case for laptop

Keyboard. If you are typing long notes or detailed diagnostics, a physical keyboard is faster. Some technicians write paragraph-length repair notes, and a software keyboard cannot compete with the real thing. That said, you can always pair a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPad for the best of both worlds.

Multi-tasking. If your POS also needs to handle email, ordering parts from suppliers, or running other business software, a laptop gives you more flexibility. Repair shops often need to check supplier websites, compare part prices, or respond to customer emails — tasks that are easier with a full desktop browser and multiple windows.

Cost. If you already have a laptop, the upfront cost is zero. A new iPad starts at around £350, which is a real consideration for a shop that is just getting started or running on tight margins. But here is the thing — if you run a phone repair shop, you almost certainly have old iPads kicking about. Trade-ins, uncollected devices, refurbs you picked up for testing. PhoneRepairPOS is deliberately built to support older hardware, so you do not need the latest model. That spare iPad gathering dust in the back? It is your new POS system.

⚠️

Hidden costs of laptops

Laptops at the counter are more fragile, take up more space, and often end up getting used for non-work browsing. A dedicated iPad keeps your team focused on repairs. We heard from multiple shop owners that their staff spent less time on YouTube and social media after switching to a dedicated iPad for POS.

Our take

Live repair status tracking on iPad
Track repairs from intake to pickup.

For the core repair workflow — intake, tracking, and payment — an iPad wins. It is faster for the common tasks, takes up less space, and creates a better experience for customers.

The numbers back this up. Shops that switched from laptop to iPad for their POS reported faster intake times, fewer missed status updates, and happier customers at the counter. The dedicated device means fewer distractions and a more professional look.

That is why we built PhoneRepairPOS as an iPad-first app. It is designed for touch, optimised for the counter, and fast enough that intake takes under 30 seconds. The interface is purpose-built for the iPad screen — not a shrunken desktop app or a stretched phone app.

If you need a laptop for other business tasks, that is fine. Keep it in the back for emails, ordering, and accounting. But your POS should live where the customers are — on the counter, ready to go.
